Safe Routes to School -- continued

In addition to the narrow shoulder and poor visibility, there is an exposed drainage ditch that is poorly marked. This leaves us no choice but to ride some sections of the route actually in the road where cars travel. I imagine this is as upsetting to drivers as it is to us. There is no bus service to families living within 1 mile of the schools, which is just one reason we are in favor of the safe routes to school project. We could drive our kids to and from school every day but we’re hoping to safely carry on our family habit of getting around by bike when we can. And we hope a good pedestrian/bike path will help other families do the same. - Steve DeVoght

Safe Routes to School

Riding bikes has been a large part of my life, and when riding “clicked” with my daughter a couple weeks before school started we got excited to work on the goal of riding to school together. We rode to the first day of class together and it was one of the best rides of my life. Luckily, we live close to the school, on Cemetery Road a little West of Vashon Highway. I had never perceived this area as dangerous until I rode it with my 6 year old daughter. We exit our driveway onto the road at the crest of a hill where there is a short stretch of gravelly shoulder that quickly disappears. Cars coming from the west are hidden from our view and we are hidden from theirs until they are upon us. Although the speed limit is 35mph, it is common for cars to speed up the hill and appear out of nowhere. The Path of Least Resistance

I am avid cyclist- both for recreation and transportation. I ride a lot around the state from the Palouse to Port Townsend and the region from Ballard to Burton. I rode by you last Tuesday. The rumble strips are a fix to a problem that didn't exist. I have been riding Vashon for twenty years. In what I assume was an ill-conceived attempt to increase driver safety (was their a study? and lots of outreach) DOT made Vashon an unsafe and undesirable place to ride. This past week I came on island to see friends and take a spin. No sooner had I climbed the hill (a favorite pastime of mine) and I started into town I saw them. Really, I thought 'why.' Then just after passing the John L. Scott real estate office I came around the bend to find a driver partially pulled off the rode to take a call. That left me with the no choice but going around the rumble strips into the road bed. Dangerous. Here's the bottom line; rumble strips were a big mistake. When I am on island I support loca

Unwelcome rumble strips on Vashon Hwy

I just got home from riding today around VI, like I do every year. I support you all in demanding that additional rumble installation be ceased, and the existing ones be repaved. Can't happen soon enough. Since when was Vashon Hwy an interstate? Did some transportation planner believe that local motorists are prone to falling asleep while driving this particular road? I'd like to see what data was used to come to this conclusion. As if. Rumbles are dangerous dirt magnets and have absolutely the opposite effect of their "safety" intent. Anyone that rides on a road knows this. I'm not surprised that cyclists are crashing on the blasted things. Unfortunately a bad example of "only cars belong on roads" thinking. Gosh, I wish all transportation planners did a bit more riding on bikes and a little less riding around in cars when implementing changes like this.
